Carhenge
Carhenge is a replica of Stonehenge, consisting of a circle of cars and 3 standing trilithons within the circle. The heel stone and slaughter stone are also present, as well as 2 station stones. The Aubrey circle was named after Sir John Aubrey, who first observed these earthworks in 1648 and recognized them as a prehistoric temple. It was not until excavations in the 1920s that they were found to be holes cut to hold timbers upright. A total of 56 holes were discovered and named Aubrey Holes in honor of John Aubrey’s observation.
Knight Museum and Sandhills Center
The innovative Knight Museum will continue to preserve, honor, and educate others about the history of Alliance and Western Nebraska and about the Sandhills pioneer spirit. This innovative historical Museum features five areas of local history, including Life in the Sandhills, Native American life, Life in the Country, Life in the Town, and The Railroad that tied it all together. The secondary theme of Rogues, Rascals, and Visionaries gives you a look at the personalities that settled the area, but you’ll have to figure out who is what!
Pioneer memorabilia, Native American artifacts, and railroad history are some of the collection’s highlights. Visitors to the museum can get a glimpse of the life lived by those who settled in this area. The Knight Museum & Sandhills Center is famous for a broad range of genealogy research as most of the city and county records are contained in a digital database as well as in their original form, and all are available to anyone who wishes to view them. The Museum offers a large research room with microfilmed local newspapers; area authors; photos; and genealogical files.
